CNN does this interesting piece with interesting reflections on the Sal9000 and Nene Anegasaki (Love Plus) Wedding:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-qaMXZ_l70

Shure most people nowadays will just shove it off as some japanese otaku weirdo that’s too timid to go after a real girl etc etc, but reporter Kyung Lah goes a little deeper into the question showing that while this might be a little odd now, it also can be the very start of a tendency of people getting related more to virtual beings than real ones.
As I’ve seen in lots of otaku documentaries and stuff, what seems to happen is that these anti-social oftenly shy and recluse people finds in virtual characters and friends relationships that are more confortable and less prone to bad surprises and judgements.
Despite Sal9000 there being an extreme case going as far as a simulated marriage and total dedication to the character, it’s becoming less and less a far fetched idea not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world of people turning the virtual world his/her only contact or at least the main contact with the outside world.
If this is bad or good, I won’t be the judge… today’s society standards certainly looks at it as something odd and weird.
But at least in some cases, I’m not so shure it’s as bad as the news makes it look…

Action News does a piece about game addiction quoting World of Warcraft and Everquest representing MMORPGs as “new sources of addiction”:
I guess the whole thing is close to fair, if compared with most of the mainstream news bashing of online games.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q99-LLJohkE

BUT, the comparison with drugs, AGAIN, is as unfortunate as ever.
As you see, they completely ignore that both WoW and Everquest have, has had, and will probably have hundreds of thousands of players who never had problems like the ones described.
It’s as close to gambling, drugs and other addiction as Monopoly and that Uno card game is.
With an userbase like the ones the games have, shure, it’s innevitable that some kids and adults who already have problems will end up having sad tales to tell. We had something very similar to that with the Dungeons and Dragons RPG decades ago.
But as I see, it could be just about any other thing. A book, a movie, TV series, a music band or whatever.
What parents, friends and other people have to understand is that, for people who already have problems (ADD, depression, etc) anything can be used as a tool to potentialize it… so there must be constant monitoring of habits to prevent those problems from getting worse.
Blaming a game for being the cause of suicide for a guy who stopped taking medication after who knows how much time he spent isolated playing one game is just bullshit.
He used the game to escape reality. So seems more likely that what killed him was the reality he was into.
If something, it’s more believable that Everquest delayed his suicide with rather than the opposite. Unfortunately, he found no one who would make his reality better than what Everquest had to offer, it seems.

Think about that.

Apparently, RPGs (role playing games) are also the work of the devil. So, even if you don’t play, watch to or know Pokemon, if you are a WoW player for instance, you’re a lost soul too!!!
That’s not me talking, fortunately:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmNb3xJFzkc

To clarify, I have nothing against religions or those who have faith in them – but I have to pitty the children of people who actually believe what this guy is saying.
It’s people like him that gives religious people a bad (and sad) face.
Of course he won’t say about the overwhelming number of crimes, acts of violence and even wars that happened because of religion… mostly because of extreme cases like him. No no no.
Because for each murder commited related to Pokemon or RPGs (because none of the cases are actually caused by them) there’s probably ten thousands… maybe even millions of deaths related to speeches just like the one he’s doing there.
So kids, play Pokemon, play RPGs and pay no attention to crooks like this guy. Because following people like him is making your own life like hell.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds is achieving something I saw very few times in my cinephile days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTUDXLKI3LY

All critics I read so far, even the most pickier ones, have only good things to say about it.

I intend to watch it soon, ’till then I can only give an idea of what I think it is.
The first few seconds of this trailer says it all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6WMesq4MXU

It’s a story of vengeance, true to Tarantino’s style, with tons of blood mixed with humor.
Only it’s with a WWII setting, which will likely be very different from the usual war movie…
“Interrogation”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIja0yValiE

Here are some more bits of the movie… embedding is disabled but you only have to click on those to be redirected to the YouTube page:
Official Trailer with better quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sQhTVz5IjQ

Second Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOMKloOEKcU

“The Vet”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qAOUp1YjH0

I’m kind of a Tarantino fan, so don’t trust my preview… go watch it yourself.

So, Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the city in which the Olympic Games 2016 will be held.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z00jjc-WtZI

The video above is one of the elements that got some judges attentions.

It’s really controversial, and I don’t wanna raise a huge discussion on this here.
But overall, it’s a great thing for the city, for the country, and for the Olympics history.
I’ll try to share my point of view on this, and leave the comments session open for discussion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGWiuxg5-Z4

First, let me explain the polemic raised on the subject.
Among the controversial points are:
1. The fact that the videos presented for the International Olympic Committee shows only the good side of the city. As all brazilians and most foreigners already know, Rio is also a city with slums, poverty, drug trafficking and violence – though it’s arguable if it’s at expected levels for a big city or not (the media exaggeration discussion).
2. The premise that with government corruption schemes, which already raised discussion on the Pan-American Games 2007 (which was also held in Rio), can end up ruining or at least creating problems in an event such as the Olympic Games, which is much bigger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNNdFc8j1Vk

Ok, with that in mind, here’s why I think it’s still a good thing.
About the first point, I think it’s reasonable to say all candidate cities did the same.
I mean, all of them have their own problems, doesn’t matter if they are located at richer or poorer countries. And after the recent global crisis, this became more evident than how it was some years ago.
About the second one, as a brazilian myself, I can’t say the point is wrong. Unfortunately, I also doubt that there will be no attempts on corruption schemes, smaller or bigger.
But if we are to wait for our government to be completely clean and decent, refusing the huge pile of benefits that an Olympic Games can bring to our country, we might as well forget it.
It’s pretty much what they say about the global crisis… you don’t fight it by stop spending money.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TCoqZNesnM

Still on that same idea, one of the huge benefits both for those who are praising and criticizing the points presented, is giving Brazil visibility.
Not only for Brazil, but also for Latin America (this will be the first Olympic Games held in Latin America, and also will be among the few held in a “3rd World Country” and on the southern hemisphere), the greatest thing is to be on the map, gain visibility.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWAlXB94R8c

Because visibility can be the key to solve problems and attract foreign investments.
It’ll also generate lots of jobs, which is something Brazil really needs, and can be used to create a chain of good things. Structural improvements, making the city a better place for tourist reception. Eliminate stereotypes and wrong images other countries might have of our country.
I also won’t argue with people saying this was a political choice… I don’t know what the Olympic Committee takes in consideration to make their choice, but I’m happy for my country, and I’m really hopping our government will make the best out of this.

It’s not that I think Rio is superior over other candidate cities in terms of infra-structure, but I kinda like the idea that the Olympic Games are being held in countries that really needs that kind of investment… So I’m also cheering for countries in the African continent or in poorer Middle Eastern or Asian countries.

But I’m finishing the post here… wrote too much already.

Quite a while ago, I remember reading about LRAD… a sound cannon developed to be used as non-lethal weapon specially in crowd control.
Well, it was finally put to use on Pittsburgh G20 protesters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSMyY3_dmrM

Much like tear gas and tasers, this is prone to raise quite a discussion.
I dunno if it’s true that it can lead to permanent hearing damages, but I imagine it really it very annoying, and will probably affect lots more people than it was intended to.
Just imagine living near the place, and having to wake up to this every time there was a protest or something.
Shure, it’s much better than accidentally breathing pepper spray, and it’s far better than rubber bullets and other methods (unless the hearing damage is true)… but critics will always be critics.

What’s you opinnion on this one?
