Kabuto Mushi – Beetle Battles – Mushiking

9 07 2009

Dunno if this is still on, but some years ago a game called Mushiking spawned a new trend in Japan and some other asian countries: Adopting stag/rhinocerous/scarab beetles as pets!

Here’s a video taken with the iPhone 3GS made by Danny from DannyChoo.com

Gratuitous Space Battles (PC)

8 07 2009

Gratuitous Space Battles (yep, that’s the name) kinda looks like a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game, but it’s not… it’s more close to a tower defense style game.
Watch this awesome idea for a space game from indie developer Positech:

At the start of the round, you buy and manage your ship formation, and when the game begins, you only watch the battle happening.
Which is pretty nice for a space game.

Abandonware – Gorilla.bas (PC)

8 07 2009

Before Worms, before browser cannon games like Yeti Games and Kitten Cannon and even before Scortched Earth, there was Gorilla.bas

This is truly abandonware, a game that came with DOS.
It came with Nibbles.bas, which I already wrote about.
It was actually a code example for compiler Qbasic, so you actually had to open the code and compile to run the game.
Since computers still didn’t have a mouse or a graphics based interface for that matter, you had to type the angle and power for your gorilla to throw a banana. Objective was to hit your enemy, as seen on the video (players are insanely good… it took me several attempts before hitting target).
Good times… xD

Mushroom Kingdom Fusion

7 07 2009

I read this confusing post few days ago about how Super Mario Bros level 1 would look if ported to the SNES. But the level looked like a mix of Super Mario Bros 2, with Super Mario Bros 3 elements, and some stuff I never saw before.

Mushroom Kingom Fusion / MKFusion / MKF

Mushroom Kingdom Fusion / MKFusion / MKF

So I decided to research a bit more about it, and thus I came to know about Mushroom Kingdom Fusion, a fan made game with modified Mario gameplay with other games cross over elements.

Exelinya Burst (PC)

6 07 2009

Exelinya Bust is yet another japanese shooter with something different.
The cute characters is much like other shooters, but this time you don’t shoot magical beams or bullets…

You have to use a gappling hook to pick enemies(?) and throw them against each other causing multiple explosions and stuff! :D
Developed by D.K, Omega and Kenmo.
Translation by Dong Oranda, a writer at indiegames.com (Dong himself corrected the info on the comments, sorry about that! ;) ).
You can get the english version at Dong’s translation blog EngRish Games Exelinya Burst page!

Team Fortress 2 – The Tabletop RPG

5 07 2009

Here’s an interesting take on Team Fortress 2: A Tabletop RPG version!

Heavy Weapons Guy Character Sheet

Heavy Weapons Guy Character Sheet

If you don’t get it, you’re probably not old enough, not nerd enough, not an RPG fan… :P
Story goes like this: Deadshot and cousing were “trapped” at their grandmother’s house without Internet or a TV to pass some time.
They were itching to play some Team Fortress 2, so they tried an “alternate” way: To make an RPG based on the game to play.
It came out so good they decided to create an unofficial RPG with all the material required.
So, they created and are updating little by little The Team Fortress 2 RPG blog with rulesets, characters sheets, and everything else. Neat!
Reminds me of a Marvel Superheroes based RPG I made 10+ years ago… it was nothing this fancy, but since I didn’t have RPG material to play with Marvel characters…

Megaman Costume Kid

5 07 2009

Luckly, having a father who was a nerd gamer wasn’t an option in my generation… well, at least not in the same sense kids can have today.
Here’s one (un)lucky kid who just happens to have a true Megaman fanboy as his father:

Oooh, I imagine when this kids gets older… emotional scars, video used as bribery… “If you don’t behave yourself, I’ll show all your friends your PEW PEW Megaman video!” xD
In a more optimistic view, maybe in the future we’ll have real live blasters so what this kid is doing is actually an early training… maybe not. :P

H.A.V.E. Online TPS (PC)

4 07 2009

H.A.V.E. is an online first person shooter that will look familiar… too familiar:

It’s from Korean developer SK-Imedia, and a blatant Team Fortress 2 rip-off.
