If you didn’t watch Inception just yet, do yourself a favor an do it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66TuSJo4dZM

I’m making this post to share my own conclusions about it, so please be advised, it’s almost pure SPOILERS.
And even if you don’t mind it, I’d suggest you don’t read it and try first to reach your own conclusions before reading this.
But if you already watched the movie, I do recommend reading the post to compare your conclusions with mine, correct me if I’m wrong, or just try to analyze the movie deeper… it’s what I liked the most about the whole movie.

Posting some of the trailers before I start rambling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3XzUYd6nrU

And one more.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmkQ7fw-l0g

Spoilers start here, you’ve been warned!
First of all, let me begin by saying that I usually don’t write movie reviews, but there’s a reason I decided to make this one.
I might be completely wrong on this one, but here’s my reason: I believe most people won’t be able to fully understand the plot complexity or the whole idea which made me admire Christopher Nolan and put this movie among the best of all times in my list.

I already had high expectations about this movie before watching it. The stunningly beautiful and atmospheric soundtrack by one of my favorite composers (Hans Zimmer), a very nice choice for trailer music (, photography from previous Nolan movies, and great actors were enough to make me guess it would be a good movie. But I really wasn’t prepared for the dimension of it!

Inception

At first, after watching it I thought it was an awesome movie – costumization, scenarios, crossreferences (M.C. Escher) – but as I was still thinking about the movie, it was only after a bathroom break that it hit me like a train… it was like HOLY F*CK! Most people won’t realize how big the story truly is!

I avoided spoilers like the plague, and I don’t know if other people reached the same conclusions as me (didn’t find anyone else who did, including people who watched it with me), but here goes.

Naturally, after getting home I started reading Wikipedia entries, searching for stuff about the movie. There are nice images out there for those who got confused about the dream levels and characters, such as this one:

The Levels of Inception

(source: http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/film/5-levels-inception-infographic.html )
And this one:

Inception Timeline

(source: http://dehahs.deviantart.com/#/d2unnlj )

I heard people comparing it to The Matrix, heard and read lots of people discussing the open end, and the fact that Nolan left the spinning totem in the end for viewers to decide it’s end.

Inception - Cobb's Totem

But here’s my opinion: There’s only one ending. And even more: Cobb’s totem isn’t something decisive to it… it’s only a tip Nolan left there for people to realise how further down the rabbit’s hole the movie’s plot goes!

One might think this way: But if Cobb’s totem stops spinning, like it almost seemed to do, then it’s proof that he’s not dreaming at all… and that’s the end of that.
What I’m thinking is: If Cobb is still dreaming, it doesn’t matter if his totem stops spinning or not since the whole idea of the totem theory was created into the dream.

Inception

The whole movie is a dream. There are few, very well mixed up, and subtle tips there… I’ll have to watch the movie all over again to “fish” some more, but from what I remember:
- Cobb is THE MAN, he’s the best, he travels around the world, everything he does works out, etc;
- Ending is perfect, just as planned, for Cobb and for his almost impossible job;

Inception - Limbo

Now, let’s talk about the plot development. More specifically the climax.
When Cobb reaches the 5th level (Limbo) there are two main things he accomplishes there: The final step to convince Robert Fisher (the Target) that the inception (that his father wanted him to dismantle the company) is real (saving the whole team during that), and coming to terms with Mal’s (his wife) death. This second accomplishment is key to understanding.

Inception - Miles

Now, to the characters: First, let’s talk about Miles (Cobb’s father in law, mentor and foster parent to Cobb’s children).
He taught everything Cobb knows about dreams, and in the final scenes it seems he knows what’s happening… calling the kids and getting Cobb’s attention.
Miles could be the one behind Cobb’s dream, which some will think as reality.
He has a reason: To make Cobb come in terms with his wife’s death, which in turn will make Cobb overcome his fear of looking his children’s face again. We still can’t know what’s the situation on reality (or I couldn’t grasp it), but it could be a completely different story.
It could be that Miles don’t even know why Cobb can’t look at his children faces, which is why he has to go so far.
But it’s a huge trauma, and an almost impossible task to accomplish.
For that, Miles needs to plant an idea on Cobb’s mind (inception), which leads us to… Ariadne – Miles’ inception to Cobb.

Inception - Ariadne

Ariadne, the architect who Miles points out as “better than Cobb”, looks like kind of a nosy student who tries to go after Cobb’s most deep and dark secrets – at one point (Limbo), justified as trying to protect the crew.
On Ariadne’s first test, she goes on a rampage changing the whole dream scene and calling a lot of attention to herself (despite Cobb’s warnings) – which could be interpreted as naiveness… or that Ariadne wanted to do that in the first place to get Mal to show up.
She is the only one who could do that, and it works as a perfect excuse to bring Mal up (and learning more about Cobb’s story), for her to keep warning and giving advices to Cobb about it, leading to Cobb’s confrontation.

So that’s it, though I’m shure I’ll have more to say after watching the movie again.
This is the reason why I admire the movie so much. It’s very rare nowadays for a movie plot to continue after it’s end, to make you want to watch it again not because you didn’t understand, but because maybe there’s more to it you’ll only be able to get on a second look.

And maybe I’m just looking too much into it, and completely wrong. I dunno. Guess only Nolan will be able to tell after all… or if someone finds something that voids my view, I’d be pleased to know about it!

Hope you enjoyed the read and the movie! And please, if you come to agree with me after reading the post, give me credit for it – remember I reached this on my own!

CNN does this interesting piece with interesting reflections on the Sal9000 and Nene Anegasaki (Love Plus) Wedding:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-qaMXZ_l70

Shure most people nowadays will just shove it off as some japanese otaku weirdo that’s too timid to go after a real girl etc etc, but reporter Kyung Lah goes a little deeper into the question showing that while this might be a little odd now, it also can be the very start of a tendency of people getting related more to virtual beings than real ones.
As I’ve seen in lots of otaku documentaries and stuff, what seems to happen is that these anti-social oftenly shy and recluse people finds in virtual characters and friends relationships that are more confortable and less prone to bad surprises and judgements.
Despite Sal9000 there being an extreme case going as far as a simulated marriage and total dedication to the character, it’s becoming less and less a far fetched idea not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world of people turning the virtual world his/her only contact or at least the main contact with the outside world.
If this is bad or good, I won’t be the judge… today’s society standards certainly looks at it as something odd and weird.
But at least in some cases, I’m not so shure it’s as bad as the news makes it look…

Action News does a piece about game addiction quoting World of Warcraft and Everquest representing MMORPGs as “new sources of addiction”:
I guess the whole thing is close to fair, if compared with most of the mainstream news bashing of online games.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q99-LLJohkE

BUT, the comparison with drugs, AGAIN, is as unfortunate as ever.
As you see, they completely ignore that both WoW and Everquest have, has had, and will probably have hundreds of thousands of players who never had problems like the ones described.
It’s as close to gambling, drugs and other addiction as Monopoly and that Uno card game is.
With an userbase like the ones the games have, shure, it’s innevitable that some kids and adults who already have problems will end up having sad tales to tell. We had something very similar to that with the Dungeons and Dragons RPG decades ago.
But as I see, it could be just about any other thing. A book, a movie, TV series, a music band or whatever.
What parents, friends and other people have to understand is that, for people who already have problems (ADD, depression, etc) anything can be used as a tool to potentialize it… so there must be constant monitoring of habits to prevent those problems from getting worse.
Blaming a game for being the cause of suicide for a guy who stopped taking medication after who knows how much time he spent isolated playing one game is just bullshit.
He used the game to escape reality. So seems more likely that what killed him was the reality he was into.
If something, it’s more believable that Everquest delayed his suicide with rather than the opposite. Unfortunately, he found no one who would make his reality better than what Everquest had to offer, it seems.

Think about that.

I dunno how Usher will respond to this in court, but the evidence is very very clear as you can see in this clip:

Oh yeah, a tip from the source blog: Play both videos at the same time. No, really!

Apparently, RPGs (role playing games) are also the work of the devil. So, even if you don’t play, watch to or know Pokemon, if you are a WoW player for instance, you’re a lost soul too!!!
That’s not me talking, fortunately:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmNb3xJFzkc

To clarify, I have nothing against religions or those who have faith in them – but I have to pitty the children of people who actually believe what this guy is saying.
It’s people like him that gives religious people a bad (and sad) face.
Of course he won’t say about the overwhelming number of crimes, acts of violence and even wars that happened because of religion… mostly because of extreme cases like him. No no no.
Because for each murder commited related to Pokemon or RPGs (because none of the cases are actually caused by them) there’s probably ten thousands… maybe even millions of deaths related to speeches just like the one he’s doing there.
So kids, play Pokemon, play RPGs and pay no attention to crooks like this guy. Because following people like him is making your own life like hell.

But there was one big problem: It’s a comic that has a song with it. Also, it was a VERY BIG comic, so it wouldn’t work if I only posted as an image.

YouTube user chrisgriffin15 solved the problem by porting it to video!
You can also see it in original version at Brawl in the Family official Ode to Minions website!

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds is achieving something I saw very few times in my cinephile days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTUDXLKI3LY

All critics I read so far, even the most pickier ones, have only good things to say about it.

I intend to watch it soon, ’till then I can only give an idea of what I think it is.
The first few seconds of this trailer says it all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6WMesq4MXU

It’s a story of vengeance, true to Tarantino’s style, with tons of blood mixed with humor.
Only it’s with a WWII setting, which will likely be very different from the usual war movie…
“Interrogation”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIja0yValiE

Here are some more bits of the movie… embedding is disabled but you only have to click on those to be redirected to the YouTube page:
Official Trailer with better quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sQhTVz5IjQ

Second Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOMKloOEKcU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qAOUp1YjH0

I’m kind of a Tarantino fan, so don’t trust my preview… go watch it yourself.

So, Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the city in which the Olympic Games 2016 will be held.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z00jjc-WtZI

The video above is one of the elements that got some judges attentions.

It’s really controversial, and I don’t wanna raise a huge discussion on this here.
But overall, it’s a great thing for the city, for the country, and for the Olympics history.
I’ll try to share my point of view on this, and leave the comments session open for discussion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGWiuxg5-Z4

First, let me explain the polemic raised on the subject.
Among the controversial points are:
1. The fact that the videos presented for the International Olympic Committee shows only the good side of the city. As all brazilians and most foreigners already know, Rio is also a city with slums, poverty, drug trafficking and violence – though it’s arguable if it’s at expected levels for a big city or not (the media exaggeration discussion).
2. The premise that with government corruption schemes, which already raised discussion on the Pan-American Games 2007 (which was also held in Rio), can end up ruining or at least creating problems in an event such as the Olympic Games, which is much bigger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNNdFc8j1Vk

Ok, with that in mind, here’s why I think it’s still a good thing.
About the first point, I think it’s reasonable to say all candidate cities did the same.
I mean, all of them have their own problems, doesn’t matter if they are located at richer or poorer countries. And after the recent global crisis, this became more evident than how it was some years ago.
About the second one, as a brazilian myself, I can’t say the point is wrong. Unfortunately, I also doubt that there will be no attempts on corruption schemes, smaller or bigger.
But if we are to wait for our government to be completely clean and decent, refusing the huge pile of benefits that an Olympic Games can bring to our country, we might as well forget it.
It’s pretty much what they say about the global crisis… you don’t fight it by stop spending money.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TCoqZNesnM

Still on that same idea, one of the huge benefits both for those who are praising and criticizing the points presented, is giving Brazil visibility.
Not only for Brazil, but also for Latin America (this will be the first Olympic Games held in Latin America, and also will be among the few held in a “3rd World Country” and on the southern hemisphere), the greatest thing is to be on the map, gain visibility.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWAlXB94R8c

Because visibility can be the key to solve problems and attract foreign investments.
It’ll also generate lots of jobs, which is something Brazil really needs, and can be used to create a chain of good things. Structural improvements, making the city a better place for tourist reception. Eliminate stereotypes and wrong images other countries might have of our country.
I also won’t argue with people saying this was a political choice… I don’t know what the Olympic Committee takes in consideration to make their choice, but I’m happy for my country, and I’m really hopping our government will make the best out of this.

It’s not that I think Rio is superior over other candidate cities in terms of infra-structure, but I kinda like the idea that the Olympic Games are being held in countries that really needs that kind of investment… So I’m also cheering for countries in the African continent or in poorer Middle Eastern or Asian countries.

But I’m finishing the post here… wrote too much already.

Quite a while ago, I remember reading about LRAD… a sound cannon developed to be used as non-lethal weapon specially in crowd control.
Well, it was finally put to use on Pittsburgh G20 protesters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSMyY3_dmrM

Much like tear gas and tasers, this is prone to raise quite a discussion.
I dunno if it’s true that it can lead to permanent hearing damages, but I imagine it really it very annoying, and will probably affect lots more people than it was intended to.
Just imagine living near the place, and having to wake up to this every time there was a protest or something.
Shure, it’s much better than accidentally breathing pepper spray, and it’s far better than rubber bullets and other methods (unless the hearing damage is true)… but critics will always be critics.

What’s you opinnion on this one?
