How many times in TV series and movies have you seen the police, FBI, counter terrorist units, private military companies and other forensics scenarios picking up crappy surveilance cameras, cellcam footage of photos and other very bad sources, applying some pixie magic state of the art impossible software and using it to scrape out information out of nowhere?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxq9yj2pVWk

Tons of times I’m guessing will be the answer.
For all of you who knows too well scenes like that, dunk3d created this video compilation that is hilarious and very very sad at the same time.

Reading through Gizmodo’s (the source) comments, seems it’s common sense that one of the prime examples of the level of absurdity moviemakers reach is Enemy of the State – from director Jerry Bruckheimer – with the famed impossible 3D rotate technology. You can watch a bit of it on this trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dvvLzNC3hE

Finally, a hilarious parody on all those absurd ideas on image analysis done with computers that are done in movies since… what? Since computers became capable of analysing images I guess.. maybe even before that. – by UK sci-fi comedy show Red Dwarf:

If you follow the tech news, you probably already heard that YouTube is already testing and slowly preparing it’s videos to play in full HD 1080p.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvuvgV3w33o

It seems there are already some videos working in full High Definition.
I have no way to test it out here at home, but I’m posting some of them.

You’ll need a monitor compatible with the standard… and then just press the HD button and put it to fullscreen.
Wow… seems it was just yesterday that we had to watch really really crappy videos on YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou6_MkIvKOo

I remember even doing a very long comparison review with several different video sharing websites, and the one thing YouTube was worst of all – video quality.
Google probably changed that…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQRemkGhYZU

Some people are failing to realize what this all means saying stuff like “my computer won’t support it” or “what’s the point of bigger resolutions if most of YouTube videos are crap”… and I kinda understand the complaints.
But the truth is: We’ll soon be able to watch DVD quality videos on YouTube. While the crappy videos will still continue to be majority, this also opens new possibilities for videos with great content.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUM1284TqFc

People with weaker computers will still be able to watch it in normal resolution.
And the boundaries between YouTube and TVs/DVDs are becoming more blurred out with this and YouTube XL.
The only thing left is YouTube removing some of it’s uploading and time restrictions… or at least making them a bit more flexible… and voilá!

This one, using liquid helium on an AMD Phenom II processor beats the 3DMark06 world record with speeds over 7Ghz!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6Hf6d404QY

Ok, so maybe you understood nothing of what I just said.
It’s basically a computer reaching extreme speeds by using extreme methods to keep the processor cool.
If you’re not nerd enough to get this video, at least this may serve as a lesson to people in the advertisement industry: Leave it to a big ad campaign to turn nerds doing an otherwise extremely boring task to turn it into something very awesome. xD

Like it or not, several technologies we use today were developed by Microsoft Research.
But mostly, there are lots of very promising new concepts coming out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oelixm_SrOQ

This first video taken from Microsoft College Tour 2009 shows theme supported text completion, content clustering and eye tracking.

Second part of the same presentation has gestures and a transparent glass display concept.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ToI_GuoJQ

But hold your horses! That display probably isn’t active… I’m guessing it’s a special glass that while being transparent, is also capable of retaining images from a projector, which is hidden somewhere.

Still, with further research, it seems this could be possible with OLED screens.

Anyways, interesting ideas!
