Zagat – nru

30 06 2009

Another interesting Android app using it’s compass function: Zagat’s nru (read “near you”):

It picks your location from the GPS and the direction you’re facing to pinpoint nearby restaurants. Nice eh?
Yeah, you’ll look kinda stupid… but then again, way better than unfolding a huge map and spending half an hour trying to locate yourself while becoming a thief target or something. :P

HTC Hero – Android

29 06 2009

HTC Hero is, to some, the first worthwhile Android phone coming out pretty soon.

Apart from standard current gen smartphone features, it also has some interesting stuff like the GPS compass that allows things such as Layar.

Layar – Mobile Augmented Reality Browser

20 06 2009

I already knew something like this would come out one day… but I didn’t expect it to be this soon, really:

Layar is a browser that integrates Augmented Reality technology with a mobile device, given it has GPS, a camera and compass (so it knows where the cellphone cam is facing). Already available for Android phones, and seems the creators, SPRXmobile, are willing to port it to other cellphones… like the new iPhone 3GS!
It’s kinda different from most Augmented Reality systems nowadays (like this AR magazine or Cyber Figure ARis) since it doesn’t actually uses image recognition software and markers, but GPS positioning and the compass to know where to display informations about the stuff you are seeing.
Very interesting stuff!

ARhrrrr – Augmented Reality Shooter

19 06 2009

Guys from the Augmented Environments Labs (Georgia Tech) made this very interesting proof of concept game that uses an nVidia Tegra to create a real time Augmented Reality map with a Zombie Shooter game:

Very interesting! Despite Augmented Reality being around for a while, developers have a hard time finding a way to use it effectively to create apps and games that makes good use of it.
Nice to see some folks are finding out new insteresting ways to make games with it.

Humanoid Robot (KHR-2HV) with iPhone (iPod touch) Head

23 05 2009

Interesting mod fusing a robot (you can buy it on robot stores in Japan) and an iPhone:

It’s still in early stages, and the video is kinda lousy… dunno if the camera lens are broken or the guy didn’t notice that something was blocking the view… but still an interesting addon.
Seems you can already do some poses and control the joints individually.
Too bad the robot looks kinda clumsy, because you know, with poses and all you could make it dance!
And a dancing robot is always awesome!

Cellphone Etiquette on the White House

18 05 2009

Here’s a lesson to everyone, fellow journalists specially:

DO NOT keep your cellphone on (or at least keep it on vibrate) in a press conference in the White House.
No, seriously, the second guy should be banned for being a douche.
This is a complete lack of respect to Gibbs and the other journalists. I know kids more polite than that.
I hate self righteous people who thinks they are so important they can keep interrupting meetings and bothering people with stupid cellphone calls, specially when he/she uses some stupid ringtone.
Here’s what I think the guy should’ve done though.

Samsung Alias2

14 05 2009

Samsung Alias² is a pretty standard cellphone, only it has one feature which is the reason why I’m posting it here:

As you might’ve guessed, it’s the customizable keyboard thinguie… which is pretty neat!
Dunno about the quality of the rest of the cellphone features though, but just thought of sharing the whole concept. :D

BlackBerry – TweetGenius

8 05 2009

I’m still not much into the whole Twitter thing, mainly because I’m already flooded with the stuff I use today, but here’s an interesting app for BlackBerry cellphones: the TweetGenius

I dunno much about the app in cellphones, but it seems there’s already a free twitter app for BlackBerries, and of course a bunch of apps for the iPhone.

Samsung Omnia HD

6 05 2009

Samsung’s new cellphone Omnia HD is coming with impressive stuff like a huge AMOLED touchscreen, HD video playback and recording, and some other stuff you can see on this video:

Pretty nice huh?
Just please don’t call it “iPhone killer” or crap like that… not that the iPhone is bad, but this cellphone has a different purpose.
Also just reminding that this won’t work as a replacement to HD camcorders or dSLR cameras… but it’s probably far nicer than most cellphone cams out there. HD video playback sounds nice too.
