Boxxy
“My name is Boxxy…” this is how Boxxy starts her videos that somehow became an internet phenomena.

Love it or hate it, her videos which otherwise could be treated as just another one amongst tons of webcam recordings on YouTube, became so famous it was graced (or cursed) with meme level status.
One thing in common for both lovers and haters though seems to be the question: Why are the videos so famous? And why did it became a meme?

Some fans explain that even though they have nothing really special, Boxxy herself has a misterious funny, cute or attractive thing that mesmerizes those who watches the videos.

I think it’s kinda cute. Like the girl friend (or girlfriend depending on your tastes) you’d like to have when younger.

Anyways, I’m making this look kinda simple, but it’s a really long saga which, if really interested in, you can check part of at The Boxxy Story blog or just Google it.
The interesting part in all this is that her particular phenomena has lots of things common to several memes involving common people.
Her videos could be used as a case study for Internet memes and fandom, on several levels. Psychological mostly.
Unfortunately, most of the meme cases involving real people ended up badly, which I suspect was also the case for Boxxy, since she had so many fans and haters that efforts to find who she really was started.
It’s kinda like your regular celebrity, but far worse (specially when it comes to fake stuff, threats, etc etc).
Hopefully, Boxxy can get over all the polemic made out of her videos and proceed to a normal life, but it’s always scary to see what can happen to some people not only because of Internet fame, but for fame in general.
It’s kind of a paradox really. The behaviour of groups of people on something as modern as the Internet sometimes isn’t much different from what it was in the Middle Ages for instance.
But I wrote too much already. So – that’s all folks!
EDIT: Just adding the videos with portuguese subtitles for brazilian readers (verified unedited videos – subtitles are mostly right, no purposedly wrong translations)!
