With all the talk about invisibility cloaks and whatnot, people thinks too much about nanotechnology and other advanced technology and forgets about the basic idea of blending in with the environment, like the chameleon does.

Camouflage - Liu Bolin
It’s actually an old military technique called Camouflage, which chinese artist Liu Bolin gives an interesting perspective of in his works.

Crash test from Mercedes’ new SLS AMG 2010 car shows new technologies to avoid serious injuries to drivers during a crash:

I’m not shure about the first part… seems the car is more “crashable” on the front part but has a security bar that prevents the damages from getting to the driver’s seat.
But the second part is really interesting. If an accident happens where the car ends upside down, there’s a system that will automatically set the doors loose. A great feature given that quite often, when accidents like that happens, the passengers ends up trapped inside the car because the doors locks them in.

I dunno how soon fathers and mothers want their small children to get in contact with gadgets and the addiction they’ll generate, but at least this PhoneBook idea looks really good on video:

And what’s not to like on a father having fun with his kid, right?
I only fear for the heavy consumer geeky Apple fanboy-ish future of the baby… (just kidding)

Some of them are very lucky in a very unlucky situation…

Dunno if you know it, but a Levitron is sort of a toy consisting of a magnetised board that creates a levitating effect with a magnetised spin.
It’s an old idea and toy that explores magnetic properties to create the effect. You probably already saw something like it in display at stores, with levitating globes and whatnot.

Leave it to researches at Johannes Gutenberg University in Germany to give the idea an upgrade, using a Helmholtz system to make it levitate heavier objects or make the spin stay floating for 5 hours! So yeah, it’s not REALLY endless… but still, that’s far more than the couple of minutes normal toys are capable of.
Interesting huh? If you’re wondering why no one made a floating car or whatever out of it, you need to read a bit more about the whole idea to realize it won’t work that way, unfortunately.
