Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai
Production I.G is directing this Musashi movie based on a Mamoru Oshii script…

…which pretends to be an “anime documentary” with more accurate historical settings on the character.
For those who don’t know, Miyamoto Musashi was a japanese historical character, swordsman and samurai.. perhaps the most worldwide famous of them all.
He shows up, both fictional and historical portraits, in music, games (Brave Fencer Musashi), over 30 movies, mangas (like Berserk) and numerous other references.
The mix of real life with fiction is so intense it’s kinda hard to know what is true and what isn’t.
The best way of knowing Musashi (IMHO), even though the story is known to be fictional, is by reading the book entitled Musashi, by Eiji Yoshikawa. It’s kinda scary at first, since it’s a 900 page compendium (divided in 7 books), but it’s surprizingly light and fast to read. Take this from a lazy reader like myself. xD
Musashi is known for his self taught swordfighting technique that uses two swords (one short and one long), and for several duels (most notably the one with Sasaki Kojiro).
He also wrote books on philosophy and strategy, which are compared to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.
It’ll be interesting to see Mamoru Oshii and Production I.G take on Miyamoto Musashi’s life.
And since I’m a fan of japanese historical animes, it’s already on my watchlist. xD
