VAIL – Autonomous Valet Parking Demo
Created by the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory at Stanford University this video shows the demo of a system installed in a common Volkswagen Passat for autonomous valet parking.
According to the video description, it uses “a night vision camera and cruise control radar (both currently available options on production vehicles) plus two small laser sensors to autonomously navigate parking lots, locate empty spaces, and park”.
Looks very interesting, and I guess when ready, the whole system won’t occupy the entire trunk space… hopefully.
Seems it still has a problem to avoid obstacles (like pedestrians for instance), so don’t expect it too soon.
There could be a number of different sollutions for autonomous valet parking (like installing RFID sensors for instance) but it’s nice to see something that works being tested out.
