Photojournalism Student – Curitiba at Night
Long story short, I’m presenting here some photos taken for a photojournalism course I’m currently in.
The intention isn’t teach or present a tutorial… it’s more like a digital album.
Even because, being just a student, the photos won’t be good examples for a lesson.
But I’ll try to explain the idea behind it all.
This first essay is about the basic rules of composition.
The original idea was to abuse a bit of the fact that I have a dSLR to take pics of the city I’m currently living in, only at night.
The equipment I used was a Canon XSi camera, a generic tripod and remote shutter trigger, with long exposure times.
The theme was about the contrast between a big city with traffic jams, lots of people around during the day (for those who knows the city) and the evening calm.
Because of some limitation (not having a car, deciding the theme almost too late, among others) I ended up going with a friend (collaborator eeggwho already wrote some posts here on XSpBlog) by foot at night.
Little bit tense considering how dangerous it is to get out at night with expensive equipment at downtown in just about any city in Brazil… but had no problems fortunately.
The environment used was downtown Curitiba, some 4 blocks from where I currently live.
I tried to capture places that resembles how the city was or could be in the past.
Curitiba is filled with green parks and some places with old buildings.
The wagon photo up there is from “Shopping Estação”, which was built in a place that used to have an old train station. Parts of it were kept and recovered, transformed in a small museum inside the shopping.
Alas, this is it for now. I’ll be publishing new photos every new essay.
For those who are curious, I’ll also point out “Operator – Operador Fotográfico” blog, from my teacher – Maria Zaclis Veiga. All in portuguese I’m afraid.
