Realtime Mobile Video Stitching
Another exciting new technology (prototype) from Microsoft: Software that can “stich” videos together (in this case, being captured by two different cellphones) mixing them up to compose another video with higher resolution.
You can almost call it “VideoSynth”, since the basic idea is almost the same from another Microsoft Research product: PhotoSynth. Only PhotoSynth is for photographs (duh), and is in an advanced development stage.
The videos were captured at the 2009 edition of Microsoft Techfest, a showcase of the latest researchs being done at Microsoft.
It’s still a prototype. The complete idea is to make the stitching in real time, even considering the speed of data transmition on cellphones.
Ayman Kaheel, one of the development managers involved on the project, claimed they still had to solve one problem to make the stitching possible. Has to do with timecodes on the videos to allow perfect synching, since current video capturing on cellphones doesn’t have them.
Very awesome. Hoping to see a more official less noisy/shaky tour on this project soon.
