Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story)
Since I first got really interested in independent gaming, I heard a lot about this game called “Cave Story“.
So, after reading a post about indie games few days ago, I decided to get and play it.
I spent a whole night playing it… 5, 6 hours straight. And the interesting thing is: Every time I start playing, some more hours go by. Didn’t finish it yet, but played enough to admire…
Basically, it’s a side-scroller with RPG elements created in 2004. The gameplay reminds of 8-bit classics like Megaman 3, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers and Alex Kidd. (some of these are on the Top 10 Hardest Games post)
But I believe that the best point of the game is the captivating plot.
I won’t tell you about it because you’ll play the game, and it’s more fun to follow the story while playing it.
It was made by Studio Pixel, more specifically Daisuke Amaya.
And through all the game, there are elements that should be considered lessons to every Game Designer.
You’ll have to play to see, but there’s a bit of everything:
- Captivating story;
- Great characters;
- Unusual enemies and bosses;
- Dificulty level that evolves with the game and player;
- etc etc;
All that in a free, simple and light game. There are no excuses for you not to play it! ![]()
I had to do some research, but found a package that has the game and the english translation all together at Miraigamer.net
Thanks Aeon Genesis!
Here in Brazil, not many people knows of it. But internationally, it’s known as one of the great representatives of the category (Indie Games).
(Fanart, with a mix of Katamary Damacy)
It’s success transcended not only independent gaming, but gaming itself, having a considerate number of fanart, fanfic, homages and quotations everywhere.
Lots of people credit this game for the current recognition of Indie Games’ value today.
Well, enough of me blabbering of how the game is good… already created too many expectations. Go play it!
Just a reminder: There are lots more fanarts and other related stuff beyond what I posted here… there are even some plans to port it to several different platforms and consoles.
But since it’s too much stuff, you’ll have to search yourself what’s best for your tastes.
But as a bonus, some fans remixed the musics from the games and compiled a CD… check it at Cave Story Remix Project!
